HRVOJE NJIRIC KEYNOTE LECTURE Jan 20, 2016 By Pia Von Barby Hrvoje Njiric (pronounce at your discretion) presented his thoughts and ideas regarding this year’s Vortex at a lecture in the evening of the first day. Offering up a whopping 33 strategies for the teams to adopt as they tackle the Preston Ave. corridor, Hrvoje’s commitment to the competition is obvious. His multi-faceted strategies included tactical mapping, connection modes between UVa grounds and the city, educational facilities, housing schemes, programmatic indeterminacy, self-regulating systems, sustainability, profit-making areas, and designer-free zones. In devising these strategies, Hrvoje studied Charlottesville, but also pulled from his own experience, as well as the work of others, particularly Cedric Price. Hrvoje’s expertise as a practitioner and an educator makes him incredibly resourceful to students and faculty members. What should students take away from Hrvoje’s 33 strategies?
